Animal Control - Season 2 【Free Access】

Animal Control - Season 2 doesn’t simply rehash the formula of capturing lost pets. The writers deliberately expanded the show’s scope in three key ways:

One of the show’s greatest strengths is its chemistry. Here’s who returns (and who joins):

| Actor | Role | Season 2 Highlights | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Joel McHale | Officer Frank Shaw | More cynical, but with cracks in the armor. | | Michael Rowland | Officer Fred “Shred” Taylor | Gets a surprise love interest. | | Vella Lovell | Supervisor Emily Price | Juggles office romance with her job. | | Grace Palmer | Officer Victoria Sands | Her leadership skills emerge. | | Gerry Dee | Officer Templeton Dumpy | The grumpy veteran gets a backstory. | | Kelli Ogmundson | Officer Dolores St. James | The animal behaviorist gets more screen time. |

The biggest upgrade in Season 2 is the confidence of the cast. Last season, Joel McHale’s Frank Shaw was pure sarcasm—a cynical ex-cop who hates people but tolerates animals. This season, we get the layers. He’s still a grump, but watching him reluctantly become a mentor to the eager Frank (yes, two Franks, played by the brilliant Michael Rowland) is the unexpected emotional anchor of the show.

But the real MVP trophy goes to Vela (Vella Lovell). Her character, the ambitious officer trying to climb the ladder, gets a hilarious B-plot in nearly every episode that often steals the show from the animal chaos. Meanwhile, Grace Palmer’s Emily and Ravi Patel’s Amit are no longer just "the other two"—their odd-couple dynamic has evolved into a genuinely sweet, awkward romance that doesn't bog down the laughs. Title: Animal Control - Season 2

The Premise: A workplace comedy following the misadventures of a team of Animal Control officers in Seattle. While they may be responsible for the city's wildlife, they are often the ones who need to be caged.

Season 2 Highlights: Frank Shaw (Joel McHale) and Fred "Shred" Taylor (Michael Rowland) return for another round of capturing critters and navigating their complicated personal lives. This season explores the fallout of the love triangle between Frank, Shred, and precinct director Emily, while introducing new, bizarre animal encounters that test the team's patience and sanity. It is a smart, silly, and heartwarming look at the people who clean up our messes—and the animals that cause them.

Where to Watch: Fox (airing) / Hulu (streaming next day). Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) Animal Control - Season 2 doesn’t simply rehash

Producers promised bigger budgets for Season 2, and it shows. The animals are no longer just background props. Episode 3 features a harrowing (and hilarious) chase involving a zebra that escapes from a private zoo. Episode 7 includes a tense standoff with a bear that has eaten psychedelic honey—turning the animal control truck into a trippy nightmare.

The visual effects team has upped their game, using a mix of trained animals, puppetry, and CGI to create seamless and laugh-out-loud moments. The show remains respectful of the animals (no real creatures are harmed), but the absurdity is dialed up to eleven.

In a March 2024 interview with Collider, Joel McHale teased the tonal shift: “In Season 1, Frank hated everyone. In Season 2, you realize he hates himself more. We get into why. Plus, I wrestle a goose, and the goose won. That’s not a joke—the goose won.”

Showrunner Bob Fisher (co-writer of Wedding Crashers) explained the creative direction: “Animal control is a metaphor for how we handle chaos. The animals are funny, sure. But the real comedy is watching flawed people try to control an uncontrollable world. Season 2 leans into that metaphor hard.” Producers promised bigger budgets for Season 2, and it shows

Grace Palmer (Victoria) added: “You’ll see Victoria fail. And that’s new. She was so perfect in Season 1. Now she makes a huge mistake that affects the whole team, and she has to earn their trust back.”

As of late spring 2024, Fox has not yet officially renewed Animal Control for a third season. However, industry insiders suggest renewal is highly likely. The show’s consistent ratings (averaging 3.5 million live viewers per episode in Season 2) and strong streaming performance on Hulu make it a valuable asset.

In a May 2024 earnings call, Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade name-checked Animal Control as “a cornerstone of our comedy development.” Given that Fox has a history of supporting shows through three or four seasons (see The Mick and Welcome to Flatch), odds are good that we’ll see Season 3 announced by July 2024.
