Unlike modern games that integrate modding tools directly into the Steam or Uplay launcher, Anno 1701 (especially the "Gold Edition" or "History Edition") keeps the editor as a separate executable file located in your game's installation directory. You do not assign AI in the editor via a simple drop-down

Step-by-Step Access:

  • Look for a file named Editor.exe .
  • Right-click the file and select "Run as Administrator" (This prevents saving errors on modern Windows OS).
  • If you are using the original DVD version, ensure the disc is inserted, as the editor may check for a valid license.

    • Note: The interface may look intimidating initially—dark greys, technical drop-downs, and no fancy 3D preview. Do not be discouraged. This is a tool built for precision, not aesthetics. Look for a file named Editor

    Always keep the mini-map window open. It gives you an instant visual of elevation (Red=High, Blue=Deep water). A good map has a mix of both.
