Upload the downloaded file to VirusTotal. A clean file should have no more than 1-2 heuristic detections (common for cracked software). If 20+ engines flag it as "Trojan.Generic," delete it immediately.
Technically, yes. The tool resets the counter, but the physical sponge may still be full of ink. If you do not open the printer and clean the pads (or install a waste ink tank mod), eventually the ink will leak out the bottom of the printer.
Avoid generic "Free Software" download sites (like Softonic or CNet - they bundle bloatware). Instead, look for technical forums:
Many free downloads of V4718 are "dirty" cracks. A high-quality resetter means:
A high-quality V4718 resetter should be a single .exe or .rar file approximately 4.2 MB to 6.5 MB. If the file is 500KB, it is a virus. If it is 15MB, it has adware.
You need to ensure your printer is compatible. V4718 is generally excellent for entry-level and mid-range Pixmas manufactured between 2015 and 2020.
Confirmed working models:
Note: Do not use this for Pro series or imagePROGRAF. Use version V5000+ for those.
This is the most critical step. The tool will not detect the printer if it is in normal mode.
Legally gray. It is copyright Canon, but resetting your own printer (rather than charging customers) is generally considered "Fair Use" for repair. You are reversing a preventative lockout, not stealing ink.
