A small but incredibly useful Quality of Life feature arrived in 1.38: Width Markers.
When customizing your truck, you can now add small marker poles to the front fenders. In real life, truck drivers use these to gauge the width of their vehicle from the cabin. In-game, this provided a massive advantage for backing into tight parking spots or navigating narrow gates, acting as a visual anchor point for the player.
Version 1.38 was most famous for introducing High Dynamic Range (HDR) skyboxes. Prior to this update, the sky in ETS2 was essentially a static, flat texture. While it looked fine, it didn't interact with the game world realistically. Download Euro Truck Simulator 2 1.38
What changed in 1.38:
This was a controversial change at launch. Many players loved the realism, but others felt the game became too dark or the lighting looked "washed out" until they tweaked their monitor settings or used mods to adjust the brightness.
Version 1.38 served as a "preparation patch" for the highly anticipated Iberia DLC. While the DLC itself wasn't out yet, the update brought specific visual upgrades to the base map: Cause: Incompatible mod or incorrect load order
While the massive Iberia DLC came later, 1.38 laid the groundwork. It added new road networks in France and Spain, preparing the map for the eventual expansion. If you own the Vive la France! DLC, 1.38 made those routes far more scenic.
If you do not own the game, SCS Software offers a free demo that usually runs a slightly older version. To download the demo for 1.38:
