Solution 1: The .res file
Old CS 1.1 maps often require custom textures (WAD files). If you see purple and black checkerboards, you need the .res file. Search for "CS 1.1 deathmatch texture pack."
Solution 2: Protocol version mismatch CS 1.1 uses protocol 46 (or 47 depending on the beta). Maps made for version 1.0 or 1.5 may crash. Ensure your map explicitly says "for CS 1.1." You downloaded the map, but the game says it cannot find it
Solution 3: Case sensitivity
The Half-Life engine is case sensitive. If the map is called FY_ICEWORLD11.BSP but you type fy_iceworld11 in the console, it will fail. Use the exact name shown in the file.
Solution: Run the map through VirusTotal if you are unsure. Better yet, use a virtual machine (Win98SE or WinXP) to play.
