Frank Major was born in Shildon, County Durham in Q4 1894 (registration district Auckland), to Thomas Major, a railway engine stoker, and Mary Ann (née Robson). He left school at 12 to work at Chilton Colliery as a pony driver. When war broke out in 1914, Major was 19 but initially exempted as a coal miner—a reserved occupation. However, by 1916, conscription and manpower shortages led him to enlist in the Durham Light Infantry (DLI).

He joined the 10th Battalion (Service), part of the 43rd Brigade, 14th (Light) Division. His service number was 43001.
