観音寺は、正式には蓮葉山妙智院観音寺といい、慶長十六年（1611）に江戸神田北寺町に、長福寺として尊雄和尚によって建てられました。関ケ原の戦いに勝利した徳川家康が、征夷大将軍となって江戸幕府を開いた頃のことです。場所は現在の皇居のすぐ近く、千代田区神田錦町のあたりといわれています。
