Serial numbers are the DNA, but the features determine the grade. Here is a checklist for finding the best specimen.
Because "histandard" is a common misspelling of "High Standard," many online auctions list these pistols incorrectly. If you are searching for the best deal, search for misspelled listings—you may find a seller who doesn't know what they have.
However, beware of fakes. Some commercial High Standard "Sport King" or "Supermatic" models have been retrofitted with military slides. Check the serial number. If the serial number is below 828,000, it is not an HD Military. It is a commercial gun dressed up for war.
Based on current auction data, here is what you can expect for a genuine High Standard Model HD Military:
The "best" serial numbers for investment are the low 850,000s with Navy provenance. These were the first major contract deliverable.
To date your pistol accurately:
| Serial Number Start | Approx. Year | Critical Feature | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 125,000 | 1948 | Blue finish, dog-leg hammer, slotted bushing. | | 140,000 | 1949 | Parkerized finish appears. Micro rear sight optional. | | 152,000 | 1950 | Straight spur hammer becomes standard. | | 168,000 | 1951 | Last commercial batch. Transition to M101 parts. |
