Scroll down to the bottom of the config.cfg file. You will see lines like:

seta cl_mouseAccel "0"
seta cl_mouseSens "5.0"

Add the following three lines exactly as shown:

seta developer "1"
seta con_enabled "1"
seta con_restricted "0"

Explanation:

For safer use (multiplayer private matches only), use:

seta developer "0"
seta con_enabled "1"
seta con_restricted "1"

(This enables console for stats and demo recording but blocks cheat commands.)

If you are using community clients like Plutonium (IW5) – the console is already enabled by default. Press ~ and type commands like fov 80. Do not use the config editing method above, as it may conflict.

Now that it's open, here are a few useful commands to try:

To close the console, just press ~ again.

If you are an admin of a dedicated server, you can access the console via "RCon" (Remote Console) tools without needing to be on the server machine physically. Standard players on servers do not have access to the server console.

While you cannot open a console window, you can alter "hidden" variables by editing the configuration files stored on your PC. This is useful for tweaking graphics settings not available in the menus (e.g., Field of View limits or specific shadow settings).

  • Save the file (Ctrl+S) and close Notepad.

  • For the vast majority of players, the "console" refers to the in-game Settings menu where you can adjust graphics, audio, and keybinds. In Modern Warfare 3 (2023), this is fully integrated and accessible at any time.

    Steps to access:

  • Navigate to Settings: Select the Gear Icon (Settings) located at the top of the sidebar.
  • Adjust Preferences: Here you can navigate to Interface, Graphics, and Keybinds to adjust your gameplay experience.
