Before we discuss a "utility," you must understand what you are fighting against. The HP EliteBook 840 G6 (launched 2019) introduced a hardened security architecture.
No official public utility exists to reset the password without special hardware. HP does not provide a downloadable tool for end users.
However, there are three legitimate methods — each with specific requirements.
If you can still boot into Windows with admin rights, you may clear BIOS settings without the password: hp elitebook 840 g6 bios password reset utility
This only works if you already know the password or BIOS is in uncommitted state – limited usefulness.
The HP EliteBook 840 G6 uses a chipset-based (Phoenix/Insyde) BIOS lock. Unlike older models, there is no universal “backdoor” password. The password is stored in a serial EEPROM (often on the main BIOS chip).
Methods that do NOT work on this model:
Step 1 – Locate BIOS chip
On 840 G6 motherboard (reverse side after removing bottom cover), find a chip labeled: Before we discuss a "utility," you must understand
Step 2 – Backup original BIOS
Clip programmer to chip → read full 32MB (256Mb) → save as bios_backup.bin.
Never skip this step – you need a backup.
Step 3 – Clear password region
The password hash is stored at a specific offset (varies with BIOS version). Common offsets:
Simpler approach:
Use hexdump to search for your password’s hash (not plaintext). Instead, just zero out the entire NVRAM region: This only works if you already know the
Step 4 – Flash modified BIOS
Write the cleaned BIOS back to the chip using programmer.
Step 5 – Reassemble & boot
The BIOS will regenerate default NVRAM – no password.
⚠️ Risk: Wrong offset or incomplete clearing can brick the laptop. Always keep a known-good backup.
HP has an internal tool called HP BCU Advanced and a hardware dongle called HP Recovery Key Dongle for authorized service partners. If you provide proof of purchase (original invoice), a service center will reset the BIOS password for a fee (typically $50–$100). They will not give you the utility; they do it in-house.
