Juuj is located in the Lower Shabelle region of southwestern Somalia. It sits precariously on a narrow strip of land between the lush floodplains of the Shabelle River and the turquoise breakers of the Indian Ocean.

Just inland, you will find the remnants of a 13th-century Swahili trading post. Juuj was once a minor node in the Gold-Salt-Ivory trade route connecting Kilwa to the Arabian Peninsula.
