She was his enemy’s greatest treasure. Now she is his most dangerous obsession.
Norway, 873 AD. When Saxon noblewoman Elara of Mercia is taken in a brutal raid, she expects death or the slave blocks. Instead, she finds herself at the mercy of Jarl Ragnar “Iron-Wolf” Bloodaxe, a legendary Viking chieftain as cold as the fjords he rules.
Ragnar does not take her for ransom. He takes her for revenge. Elara’s father once betrayed his clan, and now her blood will pay the price. But the defiant Saxon refuses to break. Night after night, she meets his glares with fire, and his commands with silent rebellion.
What begins as a battle of wills ignites into a passion that neither can control. Ragnar promised to use her as a pawn, but every touch binds her deeper into his soul. Elara swore to hate him forever, but his raw honesty and unexpected tenderness make her question who the real savage is.
When a rival jarl threatens to tear them apart, Ragnar must choose: the vengeance he has craved for a decade… or the captive wife who has stolen his frozen heart.
The Viking’s Captive Wife – He wanted a hostage. He got a queen.

Look, if you are picking up a Kate Bristol novel for a history lesson, you are doing it wrong. This is Romance (with a capital R). The longhouses are muddy, the mead flows freely, and the men wear leather pants that should probably chafe but look magnificent.
Bristol excels at making the brutality feel earned. The "captive" trope can be problematic, but Bristol handles it with a modern sensitivity. Elara never loses her voice. By the midway point, it is unclear who is truly captive—the Viking who has fallen in love, or the Saxon who refuses to admit she is home.
The novel utilizes several staple devices found in Kate Bristol’s writing and the genre at large:
La esposa cautiva del vikingo (translated as The Viking’s Captive Wife) is a historical romance novel by author Kate Bristol. It falls under the specific sub-genre of "Viking romance," a category popular for its blend of historical setting, high-stakes adventure, and intense romantic entanglements. She was his enemy’s greatest treasure
The book is typically marketed towards readers who enjoy "capture romances"—a trope where the relationship begins with one character holding power over the other (often through kidnapping or enslavement) before evolving into a consensual and passionate love story.
So, what do you get in this exclusive digital release that you won’t find in the paperback?
1. The "Runes" Chapter (Chapter 14) This is the scene everyone is talking about. In the standard edition, when Ragnar teaches Elara how to read runes, the scene fades to black. In the exclusive epub, the scene continues for another 12 pages. It is sensual, intense, and surprisingly tender. Bristol uses the metaphor of carving runes into wood to describe the marks they leave on each other. It is chef’s kiss.
2. Dual Point of View (Extended) While the standard book gives you 70% Elara and 30% Ragnar, the exclusive edition balances it to 50/50. We get to see Ragnar’s internal war. He tells his men, "She is a hostage," but his inner monologue reveals, "She is the queen I never dared to dream of." This shift changes the entire tone of the second half of the book.
3. The Alternate Ending I won’t spoil it here, but the exclusive edition offers a "What If?" epilogue. In the standard version, the book ends with them returning to Norway. In the exclusive, Bristol shows us a vision of their daughter ten years later. It adds a layer of legacy and softness that will destroy you (in a good way).
Rating: 4.5/5 Viking Horns
La Esposa Cautiva del Vikingo is not just smutty fluff (though there is plenty of steam—Chapter 16 in the hot springs is worth the price of admission alone). It is a story about the politics of power and the audacity of love between two people raised to be enemies.
If you love the vibes of The Last Kingdom but wish Uhtred would just shut up and kiss the lady already, Kate Bristol has delivered your perfect read.
