Released later in the GameCube's lifecycle, 1.02 is the definitive "patched" version. It did not drastically alter character balance, but it did two critical things:
Crucially, NTSC 1.02 retains the "NTSC Bonuses" – higher hit-stun and stronger kill moves on characters like Fox, Falco, Marth, and Sheik. PAL versions later nerfed these characters, making NTSC 1.02 the preferred "high-octane" competitive experience.
The stability of NTSC 1.02 has made it the bedrock for the modding community. Using tools like DAT Texture Wizard or MCM, you can inject custom skins, stages, and soundtracks into a COPY of the 1.02 ISO.
