If you told the Malayalam film industry a year ago that the biggest discussion on BOOMEX (the new box office aggregator for niche and re-release tracking) would be about a 1965 black-and-white drama, they would have laughed. Yet, here we are.
Muthalaliyude Bharya — the S. L. Puram Sadanandan classic originally starring Sathyan and Sharada — returned to select screens in a digitally remastered 4K version in September 2024. And against all odds, it’s become the dark horse of the season.
Directed by a debutant, Muthalaliyude Bharya attempts to bank on the age-old trope of the "wealthy landlord and the young wife." The story revolves around Rajasekharan Nair (played by a veteran character actor), a wealthy but aging businessman who marries a much younger woman, Lakshmi (played by a newcomer). The plot thickens when Lakshmi realizes she is trapped in a loveless marriage and seeks solace elsewhere, leading to a series of misunderstandings, slapstick humor, and eventual tragedy—a formula often seen in low-budget adult comedies.
What made Muthalaliyude Bharya a "Boomex" was its distribution strategy. The producers refused a direct OTT deal. Instead, they held the film for a mandatory 60-day theatrical window.
