For decades, the mainstream narrative insisted that body positivity and wellness were at odds. The logic went something like this: If you are happy with your body, you will become complacent. You need dissatisfaction to fuel the discipline required for exercise and healthy eating.
This is a lie.
In fact, research in behavioral psychology suggests the opposite. Shame is a terrible long-term motivator. It triggers the release of cortisol (the stress hormone), which can lead to emotional eating, increased belly fat storage, and burnout. When you approach a workout thinking, “I hate my thighs,” you are operating from a place of punishment. Eventually, you will stop showing up.
A body positivity and wellness lifestyle rejects this dichotomy. It posits that you can (and should) pursue health because you value your body, not because you despise it. For wellness practitioners :
This report examines the relationship between body positivity and wellness lifestyle practices. It finds that body positivity—when integrated authentically—enhances long-term engagement in health-promoting behaviors, reduces disordered eating and exercise patterns, and supports mental well-being. However, commercial co-optation of the movement can dilute its core message. Recommendations for inclusive wellness frameworks are provided.
