But a quiet revolution is taking place. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), behavioral issues have become the leading cause of euthanasia for young, healthy dogs and cats. Not cancer. Not kidney failure. Anxiety.
“We are realizing that ‘behavioral euthanasia’ is a failure of diagnosis, not a failure of the animal,” says Dr. Marcus Thorne, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. “An animal doesn’t wake up and decide to be aggressive or destructive. It is either in pain, or it is terrified. Our job is to figure out which.”
This shift has given birth to a new medical paradigm: Behavioral First Aid. In leading veterinary hospitals, the triage process now includes questions about sleep patterns, startle response, and social withdrawal alongside heart rate and temperature.

Veterinarians rely heavily on behavioral cues to diagnose subclinical or early-stage diseases. Since animals cannot verbally communicate discomfort, their actions speak for them.
