Luts Upd - Phantom

Do not grade directly from a Phantom LUT monitor recording (e.g., using a Ninja V that burned in the LUT). You will lose color information permanently.

Do not use Phantom LUTs for white balance judgment – the desaturation hides color casts.

Do not trust exposure entirely from Phantom LUT – use false color or waveform in parallel.

Do inform your DIT and colorist that you used Phantom LUTs only for monitoring.

Do periodically check false color without Phantom LUT to verify exposure.

Installing the LUTs on your camera is half the battle. The Phantom LUTs UPD also includes technical Cube files for post, which are slightly different from the monitor LUTs.

These cameras do not support internal LUT recording, but they support Monitor LUTs (View Assist).

Step 1: Download the UPD Package

Step 2: Format Your SD Card (In Camera)

Step 3: Import via SD Card (Computer)

Step 4: Load in Camera

Troubleshooting: If the camera says "No LUT file found," your card structure is wrong, or the LUT size is too large (stay under 5MB per file). ❌ Do not grade directly from a Phantom

If you are a Sony shooter tired of "fixing the image in post," absolutely. The Phantom LUTs are widely considered the industry standard for on-set monitoring and rapid turnaround.

However, the "UPD" (Update) is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Sony changes its firmware security protocols roughly every six months. An older LUT pack (say, from 2022) will either fail to load on a 2024 camera or will produce inaccurate IRE levels.

Final Checklist before you shoot:

If you answered "Yes" to all four, your Sony camera is now professionally calibrated to ARRI standards. Go shoot.

If Joey has released an updated version of his LUTs (e.g., v2.0 → v3.0): How to Install:

The LUT does not touch the recorded file. When you import footage into DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, or Baselight, you will see the full LogC image unless you manually apply a Phantom LUT or a standard ARRI LogC-to-Rec709 LUT.
