This report provides an overview of the transgender community as an integral part of the broader LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and other sexual/gender minorities) culture. While united under a shared history of marginalization and resistance, the transgender community has distinct needs, experiences, and cultural markers separate from those based on sexual orientation. The report highlights key terminology, social challenges, legal landscapes, and the evolving cultural visibility of transgender people. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 32 transgender people were killed in the U.S. in 2023-2024, the majority being Black and Latina trans women. These are almost certainly undercounts. Unlike general anti-LGBTQ violence, transphobic attacks often go unreported or are misreported by media (deadnaming victims, using incorrect pronouns). The transgender community has created projects like the Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20), now an official part of the LGBTQ calendar, to honor victims and demand justice.
