The Setup Richard (Dick) Shelton is a young nobleman whose father has been mysteriously murdered. Dick is under the guardianship of Sir Daniel Brackley, a cunning and unscrupulous baron who shifts his allegiance between the warring houses to maintain his own power. While Sir Daniel pretends to be a father figure to Dick, he is actually the one responsible for the death of Dick's father.
The Outlaws A group of outlaws, operating in the forests like Robin Hood's men, begins to target Sir Daniel's men. They shoot black arrows as a warning and a signature. They are led by a mysterious figure. A rhyme circulates among the outlaws, serving as a hit list:
"I had four blak arrows under my hand, And the fourth shall be for Sir Daniel." "I had four blak arrows under my hand,
The Disguise Dick meets a young man named John Matcham, who is actually Joanna Sedley in disguise. Joanna is a wealthy heiress whom Sir Daniel plans to marry off to Dick against her will (or to someone else for political gain). Dick discovers her true identity and the two fall in love. They realize they cannot trust Sir Daniel and flee into the forest.
The Betrayal Dick eventually learns the truth: Sir Daniel murdered his father to seize the family estate. Disillusioned and angry, Dick joins the outlaws (the "Black Arrow" fellowship) to seek justice. He takes up the mantle of the Black Arrow to fight against his treacherous guardian.
The Climax The conflict culminates in a battle. Dick proves himself as a brave fighter and a leader. He confronts Sir Daniel. In the final showdown, justice is served—often depicted as Sir Daniel falling to one of the black arrows (shot by the outlaw Ellis Duckworth or Dick himself, depending on the adaptation).
