2018: Sketchup Pro

Trimble continued its push to make SketchUp a valid BIM tool. The 2018 "Classifier" tool allowed users to assign IFC types (like IfcWall, IfcDoor, IfcWindow) to geometry. This meant that when the model was exported to other BIM software like Revit or ArchiCAD, the data traveled with the geometry.

SketchUp Pro 2018 was not a visual overhaul, but rather a "under-the-hood" upgrade focused on drawing efficiency and data management.

While not a full BIM tool, 2018 introduced "Advanced Attributes" allowing components to carry data like "manufacturer," "cost," "fire rating," or "material type." This data can be exported to IFC or spreadsheets, bridging the gap between Sketchup and engineering analysis software.

Even great software has quirks. Here is how to solve the top three problems in SketchUp Pro 2018. sketchup pro 2018

Issue 1: The model turns white or pink.

Issue 2: "File is from a newer version" error.

Issue 3: Section fills disappear in LayOut. Trimble continued its push to make SketchUp a valid BIM tool

In the 3D community, a passionate group of "SketchUp 2018 Forever" users exists. Their reasons are valid:

If this sounds like you, stick with SketchUp Pro 2018.

Because SketchUp Pro 2018 does not require constant internet authentication, it is frequently used on locked-down production networks (no Wi-Fi on set). The designer can quickly manipulate geometry in real-time while the director makes changes. SketchUp Pro 2018 was not a visual overhaul,

While the current standard is SketchUp Pro 2024 (and beyond), the 2018 version holds a special place in the history of the software. Released in late 2017 by Trimble (following their acquisition from Google), SketchUp Pro 2018 represented a turning point where the software began integrating more heavily into professional BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflows while attempting to maintain the simplicity that made it famous.

For many professionals, the 2018 version is considered the last iteration before the interface and licensing models underwent significant changes in 2019 and 2020. It is widely regarded as a stable, robust, and efficient version for architectural visualization.
