Smallville is an American superhero television series developed by writers/producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. It tells the story of a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, before he becomes Superman.

The series originally aired from 2001 to 2011. Below is a complete breakdown of all ten seasons.

It’s been over a decade since Smallville flew off the air (and four years since the Crisis on Infinite Earths cameo that made us all ugly cry). But in 2021, with superhero shows dominating every streaming service, I went back to the beginning. All 10 seasons. 218 episodes.

And something strange happened while binging: I kept seeing the number three.

Season 1-3: The Tornadic Teen
Clark is all angst, flannel, and red truck crashes. He fights Freak of the Week meteor freaks, pines for Lana, and lies to his parents. These seasons are the high school trilogy—messy, heartfelt, and full of “No, Clark, don’t go in the cave!”

Season 4-6: The Reluctant Hero
Graduation hits, and suddenly Clark has to save the world and work at the Daily Planet. These three seasons give us Lois Lane, the Fortress of Solitude, and Clark finally understanding he can’t just be a farm boy. Also, witches. Yes, really.

Season 7-10: The Man of Steel (Almost)
By seasons 7-10, Clark has faced Doomsday, Zod, Darkseid, and his own dark side (Red K Clark, anyone?). These seasons are darker, more serialized, and lead to the finale where he finally puts on the suit. Only took a decade.


Smallville didn’t invent the superhero TV show, but it perfected the 10-season, three-act structure. Seasons 1-3 are the origin. Seasons 4-7 are the struggle. Seasons 8-10 are the payoff.

Aired: 2004-2005

A tonal shift. Season 4 introduces Lois Lane (Erica Durance) as Chloe’s wild cousin. The “threes” here are the three Stones of Power (Water, Fire, Air) that unlock the Fortress. Highlights: “Run” (Bart Allen, the first Flash), “Transference” (Lionel swaps bodies with Clark), and “Commencement” (the Stones crash-land in Smallville). Season 4 also sees Lex marry Lana—a bizarre but pivotal turn. For fans searching in 2021, this season is often cited as the most rewatchable because of Lois’s arrival.

Aired: 2003-2004

Considered by many fans the darkest season of the “high school threes.” Clark becomes addicted to red kryptonite (which removes inhibitions) and abandons Smallville. Lex descends further into paranoia, manipulated by his father Lionel (John Glover). Lana discovers Clark’s secret—multiple times—only to have her memory wiped.

The third season perfects the triangle of tragedy: Clark, Lana, and Lex. By the finale, “Covenant,” Clark rejects Jor-El’s demand to rule Earth and returns home, but a girl claiming to be Kara (a young Kryptonian) arrives. Season 3 ends with Clark embracing his destiny—but on his own terms.
