Starcraft Brood War 1161 Direct Play Portable Install May 2026
When running Starcraft.exe from a portable directory on multiple LAN PCs:
| Component | Behavior | |-----------|----------| | Game Discovery | Uses UDP broadcast on port 6112. Works across subnets only if broadcast forwarding is enabled (rare). | | Join Method | “Direct Connection” (IP entry) is more reliable than “Local Area Network” (UDP broadcast). | | Latency | 0–2 delay setting recommended. v1.161 has deterministic lockstep; higher delay masks packet loss. | | Firewall | Windows will prompt for Starcraft.exe; portable location doesn’t matter. Allow private access. | starcraft brood war 1161 direct play portable install
Known issue: On modern switches with storm control, the UDP broadcast packets used by DirectPlay for game listing may be dropped. Always fall back to Direct Connection → Enter Host IP. When running Starcraft
