The hook: A man with a lizard head hunts the sorcerers who cursed him in a grimy, post-apocalyptic city. Why you’ll love it: There are no "good guys." The protagonists are murderous amnesiacs, and the antagonists are corporate sorcerers. The world is filthy, the magic system is unique (smoke-based), and the 3D/CG anime adaptation surprisingly captures the chaotic energy of the manga. Read the manga for the full conclusion.
Do not judge this by its fluffy cat-and-mouse premise. Tohru Honda is an orphan living in a tent when she is taken in by the mysterious Sohma family. She discovers they are cursed: when hugged by the opposite sex, they turn into the Chinese zodiac animals. This is a slow burn that tears your heart out. It deals with trauma, abuse, and forgiveness. The 2019 anime covers the entire manga, which the 2001 version failed to do.
