The Animated Movie "Tarzan & Jane" (2002) - Not 1995: A Review of the Underrated Sequel

The Disney franchise of Tarzan has been a beloved part of many people's childhoods. The 1999 animated film "Tarzan" was a massive success, and it paved the way for a sequel. However, the 2002 animated movie "Tarzan & Jane" (released in 2002, not 1995) received mixed reviews and didn't quite match the success of its predecessor. Despite this, the movie has its own charm and offers an exciting, action-packed adventure with stunning animation.

A Brief Overview

"Tarzan & Jane" is set a year after the events of the first film. Tarzan (voiced by Tony Goldwyn) and Jane (voiced by Minnie Driver) are now living in the jungle, enjoying their life together. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted by a new villain, Clayton's (voiced by Brian Blessed) brother, Captain Clayton (also voiced by Brian Blessed). The Captain is determined to capture Tarzan and kill him, while Jane and her friends try to stop him.

Animation and Music - The Highlights of the Movie

The animation in "Tarzan & Jane" is undoubtedly one of its strongest aspects. The film features beautiful, vibrant colors and detailed character designs. The action sequences are fast-paced and thrilling, with Tarzan's agility and strength on full display. The movie's score, composed by Phil Collins and Hans Zimmer, is equally impressive. The soundtrack features catchy and energetic songs, including "You'll Be in My Heart (A Song for My Children)" and "It's Not Over Yet."

The Voice Cast - A Familiar yet Talented Group

The voice cast of "Tarzan & Jane" includes many familiar names. Tony Goldwyn and Minnie Driver reprise their roles as Tarzan and Jane, respectively. The chemistry between the two leads is still palpable, and they deliver solid performances. Brian Blessed, who played the villainous Clayton in the first film, returns as Captain Clayton. His character adds a new layer of complexity to the story, and his voice acting brings the necessary menace to the role.

A Critical Analysis - Understanding the Movie's Reception

Despite its strengths, "Tarzan & Jane" received mixed reviews from critics. Some felt that the movie didn't live up to the standards set by the first film, while others praised its entertainment value and animation. The movie holds a 44% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics noting that the story is somewhat predictable and the characters are underdeveloped.

However, it's essential to consider the movie in the context of its time. The early 2000s saw a surge in direct-to-video sequels, and "Tarzan & Jane" was one of them. While it may not have been as successful as its predecessor, the movie still has its fans and offers an enjoyable viewing experience.

Conclusion - A Hidden Gem Worth Watching

"Tarzan & Jane" (2002) may not be as well-known as some of Disney's other animated films, but it has its own unique charm. The movie's stunning animation, catchy soundtrack, and talented voice cast make it a worthwhile watch. While it may not be as strong as the original "Tarzan" film, it's still an entertaining adventure that fans of the franchise will enjoy.

In conclusion, if you're looking for an action-packed animated movie with a focus on adventure and romance, "Tarzan & Jane" is worth checking out. It may not have received the same level of critical acclaim as some of Disney's other films, but it remains a fun and engaging watch.
