This is where confusion is highest. For most Army Recruitment Rallies (for Jawan posts), a self-attested unmarried certificate is accepted. However, some specific recruitment drives or technical entries may require it to be attested by:
Rule of thumb: Always read the specific Rally Notification (official advertisement) on the official website joinindianarmy.nic.in. If it says “self-attested,” a simple signed plain paper is enough. If it says “attested by Gazetted Officer,” you must get a signature and stamp.

In some states or for certain entries, the Army asks for an Unmarried Affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper (usually ₹10 or ₹100). This is a more legal document sworn before a Notary or First Class Magistrate.
This is a critical ethical and legal question. Suppose you submit an unmarried certificate during the application in January, but your marriage is solemnized in June, and your training starts in August.
The Army Rule: You must report your change in marital status to the Recruiting Directorate immediately.
Only Exception: Officers and JCOs are permitted to marry after completion of initial training (usually after 2–3 years of commissioned service) with prior permission from the CO.
While this article focuses on "unmarried," a note for widowers/divorcees: They cannot use the unmarried format. They must submit:
Format: "I, [Name], son of [Father's], divorcee since [Date of Decree] vide Case No. [X] of [Court], do hereby state that I have not remarried and am currently treatable as unmarried for service purposes."
