Title: The Whale (2022) Starring: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink The Verdict: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

The Review: Darren Aronofsky is known for bleakness (Requiem for a Dream), but The Whale offers a surprising amount of light amidst the dark. Brendan Fraser plays Charlie, an English teacher living with severe obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

While the setting is claustrophobic (almost entirely in one apartment), the emotional scope is massive. Fraser’s performance is not just "brave" due to the prosthetics; it is technically flawless. He captures a desperation for redemption that is exhausting to watch but impossible to look away from. The script occasionally leans too heavily on melodrama, but the acting anchors it.

Why Watch: For an acting masterclass. Fraser’s Oscar win was well-deserved.

Director: Christopher Nolan

The Plot: The story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project to create the atomic bomb, and the subsequent security hearing that destroyed his reputation.

The Review: Nolan trades his usual time-bending action for dialogue as a weapon. This three-hour biographical drama is relentless. Cillian Murphy’s gaunt, haunted eyes carry the weight of the world. However, a word of caution for casual viewers: the drama is dense. It requires active listening. The film’s genius is in its third act—the trial of Lewis Strauss—which re-contextualizes the entire movie as a tragedy about ego and guilt. Rating: 10/10

Director: Kenneth Lonergan The Plot: A depressed janitor (Casey Affleck) returns to his hometown after his brother’s death, only to discover he has been named guardian of his teenage nephew. The Review: This is the saddest film on this list. Unlike Hollywood dramas where grief is solved by the third act, Manchester argues that some wounds never heal. Affleck’s performance—specifically the scene where he tells his ex-wife (Michelle Williams) "There’s nothing there"—is the single best piece of dramatic acting of the 21st century. Rating: 9.5/10 (Warning: Bring tissues)
