Windows 8.1 uses digital licenses. If you previously had a genuine 8.1 license linked to your hardware (or a product key), it will activate automatically. However, Microsoft’s activation servers for 8.1 are still online (as of 2026), but that could change at any time.

Important: No new security updates have been released for 8.1 since January 2023. Even a “fully updated” 2026 ISO cannot change that — it will still contain unpatched vulnerabilities discovered after EOS.
