6. If Activation Fails (legit licenses only) At the product key prompt:

Temporarily disable Windows Defender, McAfee, Norton, or Malwarebytes. They often quarantine the ODIS (Autodesk component installer) or setup.exe as false positives.

When you click File → Open, AutoCAD 2016 on Windows 10/11 will often freeze or crash.

If you absolutely must run AutoCAD 2016: Install Windows 7 in a virtual machine (VMware or VirtualBox) and run it there. Pass-through licensing works, and performance is actually better than bare-metal on Windows 11.

After 30+ test installs on Windows 10/11, this sequence works in ~85% of cases:

  • When the installer pauses at 12–15% (checking VC++), it will likely error with Error 1603.
  • At the product key prompt:
  • Installation path: Avoid C:\Program Files if possible. Use C:\Autodesk\2016 to bypass permission issues.
  • After “Installation Complete” – do not launch yet.
  • Enter the Serial Number and Product Key: Enter your Autocad 2016 serial number and product key.
  • Choose the Installation Location: Select the location where you want to install Autocad 2016.
  • Review and Accept the License Agreement: Review the license agreement and accept the terms.
  • Click Install: Click the "Install" button to begin the installation process.
  • Wait for the Installation to Complete: The installation process may take several minutes to complete.
  • Launch Autocad 2016: Once the installation is complete, launch Autocad 2016 and activate it using your Autodesk account.
